Job Description

One Acre Fund – Ethiopia is partnering with the Amhara Regional National State to improve farmer incomes and environmental outcomes via agroforestry entrepreneurs and teff seed multiplication. We are in an exciting phase of work in which we are trialing novel approaches and preparing for scale up in the coming years. Position Reports to: M&E Coordinator

Duties and Responsibilities

We are a small team and thus this position provides the opportunity for a hard worker to learn and do many different things:

  • Supporting survey questionnaire testing
  • Bench testing surveys and data collection materials at the office to catch errors
  • Field testing surveys and data collection materials in the field, catching any errors, and providing critical ideas for how to improve the survey
  • Supporting/doing data quality checks in the field, both with the temporary M&E field and occasionally with the  Program teams for Seed or Trees, by
  • Spot checking enumerators and correcting errors
  • Conducting backcheck surveys
  • Supporting quick data checking process for errors at the office
  • Collecting both qualitative and quantitative data
  • This will be direct work, not through a team, during the times of the year when there is no temporary M&E field team
  • Might include small sample size surveys, key informant interviews, focus group discussions
  • Working with project team to facilitate M&E field team and activity introduction to Woreda and Kebele level stakeholders
  • For 3-4 months of the year (May-Aug), directly managing a temporary M&E team of around 2 supervisors and 12 enumerators in 2 Woredas  to run surveys designed to evaluate One Acre Fund’s tree project
  • Observing and supervising in-field survey execution
  • Check on the daily surveys done by your team and use actual KPIs vs. goals to push improved performance
  • Running weekly meetings with field team at the Woredas
  • Observing and providing feedback to field team executing surveys
  • Evaluating the performance of the team members for allocation of performance bonuses
  • This requires extensive walking and using public transport to remote rural locations and physical work including field measurements and counts of trees
  • Translating survey questionnaires & other staff materials  (English to Amharic)
  • Entering surveys into the CommCare data platform (after training)
  • Supporting in field team recruitment, onboarding and training process
  • Assisting with data processing including some data entry, downloading and compiling databases from CommCare, catching errors and cleaning data, generating new variables for analysis (mostly in Excel, perhaps some later through Stata coding)
  • Performing other duties as requested by your supervisor

Job Requirements


Required Qualifications: these will be verified and tested during the selection process

  • University Degree ideally in Statistics, Economics, Agricultural Economics, Agriculture, or other data related qualification
  • 2 to 3 years of work experience in a rural area, ideally with 1+ years in at least one of the following:
  • Data collection
  • Agriculture, NRM or a related field
  • Management of a team
  • Excellent communication and social skills
  • Excellent attention to details
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to learn quickly
  • Good computer skills - in email, Excel and Word, Amharic typing apps
  • Proficient in English, both written and spoken
  • Willing to travel by public transport to the field for field work
  • Willing and able to walk on foot for long hours every day to travel to remote rural locations
  • Willing and able to stay in the field for days for field work such as field measurements and counts of trees

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience using tablet based data collection apps such as  CommCare
  • Some experience in survey writing
  • Some experience in English to Amharic translation
